A Levels: The next steps to University

At University

The Student's Union

The Students’ Union is many things to many people, but the most important thing to know is that it is yours!

As a student of the University of Northampton you are automatically a member of the Students’ Union, run by students for students.

We exist to represent and support every student at the University and, as a member, you have the power to influence how we operate, lead your own activities and deliver your own campaigns and projects!

We provide academic representation for those times when things go wrong. Through our democratically elected Sabbatical Officers, Part Time Officers, Faculty and Course Reps we offer support for when your voice needs to be heard.

The Sabbatical Officers are always available to listen and support you when you need it, you can contact them when you need assistance and you can follow them on twitter @YourSUPresident @YourVPEducation and @YourVPUnionDev respectively.

Throughout the year we run campaigns and raise awareness of issues that affect students. We campaign on the issues that are important to you on a local level, with the University and nationally and can support you in developing your own.

We have 37 Sports Clubs to choose from ranging from American Football and cheerleading to trampolining and rugby, competing in British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) competitions each week, traveling to other Universities in the Midlands and beyond.

Northampton American FootballBest of all, participation in our Sports Clubs in entirely FREE.

There are no fees to pay to join! This is great if you’ve not played a sport before or not sure which sport might be for you because there are no upfront costs to pay to give any of our Clubs a go. Simply join online on the Students’ Union website and attend a training session to see if it’s the perfect fit for you!

If you’re looking for something a little less competitive we also have a number of intramural leagues (Northampton students playing friendly matches with other Northampton students) and offer FREE fitness classes – so there really is something for everyone!

In addition to our sports, the Union also has an array of diverse and popular societies – over 60 of them – including the Medieval Society, Doctor Who Society, Education Society and Islamic Society!

Joining a society in undoubtedly the best way to make new friends and meet more people from outside of your course – get away from the books and have some fun!

If you can’t find the society you’re looking for, why not start your own? Setting up a new society is easy – you just need yourself and four additional friends, which might be your coursemates, your flatmates or even someone you met at the bus stop! You might start a society around your degree programme or set up a society to find other people interested in your hobby or interest – like chess, gaming or film – or just to bring together a group of like-minded people like so many of our religious or political groups have done.

Whatever your passion, the number of opportunities for you to create your own activity, project or student group are only limited by your imagination!

If you’re hungry we operate retail outlets on both campuses, offering a range of convenience goods, sandwich meal deals and the obligatory University hoody! Any profits made in our shops, bars and events are used to fund all the other great we offer at the Students’ Union and our loyalty scheme utilising your student card puts 5% of your purchases back into your pocket!

Your time at university is really what you make of it. However, no matter your sex, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, race, religion or belief, colour, nationality, disability or age, your Students’ Union will always be here to help you make the most of your experience at the University of Northampton.
